Out-of-school care

Out of school care

Out-of-school care is a private matter in Switzerland and financed by the parents. The majority of childcare facilities are privately run. However, even private daycare centers are generally supported by the state and prices vary depending on the family income. At present, it is more and more common that state schools have to offer out-of-school care by cantonal law during lunch time and after school. You will have to register your child/children with the school.

Horte/Schülerclubs: daycare centres for primary school pupils

Usually, Horte are run by the local school. Opening hours vary, but mostly they are open from 7am to 6pm. They provide breakfast, lunch tables (at which the children get a cooked and well-balanced meal), and after-school care. During after-school care, children will also get support with their homework. Moreover, the staff organise outdoor activities, sports and games. Most of these centres are also open during the holidays, except for 2 weeks in summer and 1 week over the Christmas holiday. Parents can book packages according to their needs, e.g. full-day support, lunch time only, or after-school support.

Mensa (school canteen)

For older pupils (secondary school), the local school usually runs a school canteen where children can buy a warm meal. In most instances, this is also where teachers will eat.

Tagesfamilien / daycare family

A daycare family will look after a child whose parents are at work during the daytime, in addition to its own children. The system is run by regional associations that act as consultants between care families and the child/family to be supported. The association issues a care contract between the two parties and surveys the relationship during the entire support period.
