House rules
We don't want to put you off with the following standard house rules. Rather, they are meant to help you familiarise yourself more quickly with the Swiss customs, and you will settle in so much more easily.
- Often a designated caretaker is responsible for the cleaning of communal building sections such as stairs, cellar, corridor, entrance hall attic and for snow clearing etc. If this is not the case these tasks shall be performed by the tenants. In both cases tenants are responsible for cleaning up any untidiness they may cause.
- The use of shared laundry facilities is normally subject to a schedule compiled by the landlord/caretaker, or by the tenants themselves. After using the facilities, you should always leave the place clean and tidy. Wipe the appliances on the outside and sweep the floor if necessary. Especially in Winter time make sure that the windows are closed. As a rule, you should not wash between 10pm and 6am. Laundry room regulations
- General rules for rented property do not allow you to shower between 10pm and 6am. However, this rule is usually handled in a very relaxed manner.
- Do not empty anything or shake eiderdowns etc. out of windows or from terraces/balconies.
- Playing a loud instrument or listening to loud music without headphones is not allowed between 9pm and 8am, and during 12pm and 1.30pm.
- Never dispose hard objects, ash, household waste, cinders, sanitary towels, nappies, cat litter etc. down the toilet.
- Always dispose your waste in an appropriate manner and do not leave it in communal areas such as staircases etc. The same applies to personal items.
- If you have a balcony or terrace, you may use a barbecue grill operated by electricity or gas if this does not disturb other tenants, but charcoal is usually not permitted.
- The main entrance door shall remain locked during the night.
- Make sure the lifts are operated with all due care. In case of any defects, notify the caretaker or house management immediately.
- Vehicles such as cars and bicycles may only be parked in designated areas. If you rent a parking space, please refrain from using the guest parking, this is only for guests of the property.
- The use of a communal garden or yard is regulated by the house management. If you have a property with a garden, the rules will be specified in special garden regulations. In general, reasonable changes may be made to the garden area, however, they must be authorised by the agency/landlord and in most cases, need to be reverted when moving out of the property. You should also refrain from mowing the lawn during the hours stated above for showering. Please note that mowing your lawn on a Sunday is not permitted.
- The heating should not be turned off completed during the cold period, in order to prevent pipes from freezing over.
- If you have heavy furniture, please put appropriate floor protection underneath.
- If you have a balcony or terrace with roller blinds, please have them rolled up during bad weather conditions, otherwise you would be liable for any damages caused by the weather.
